A 17th-Century Engineering Feat

The Malpas Tunnel is one of the most remarkable structures of the Canal du Midi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built in 1679 under the direction of Pierre-Paul Riquet, it is considered the first navigable canal tunnel ever constructed.

At the time, the project was bold and controversial: cutting through a hill to allow water and boats to pass was an unprecedented technical challenge. Yet the structure was successfully completed and remains in operation today.

A Site Where Several Eras Meet

The Malpas site is particularly fascinating because it brings together three infrastructures from different historical periods:

  • The Canal du Midi tunnel (17th century)

  • A 19th-century railway tunnel

  • The remains of an ancient Roman road

This layering of constructions highlights the strategic importance of this passage over the centuries.

Watching Boats Pass Through the Tunnel

From the towpath or the surrounding heights, you can watch barges and leisure boats enter and exit the tunnel. The crossing is slow and impressive, especially during the high season when river traffic is busier.

It’s a simple yet original activity that helps visitors better understand the ingenuity behind the Canal du Midi and how it functions.

A Pleasant Walk in Natural Surroundings

The Malpas Tunnel is set in a pleasant natural environment, surrounded by vineyards and garrigue. The paths along the canal are accessible on foot or by bike and offer an easy outing suitable for all ages.

From the top of the hill, you can enjoy wide views over the landscape and better appreciate the layout of the different infrastructures.
