A Medieval Village Listed Among the Most Beautiful in France
Olargues is one of the most remarkable villages in the Hérault department. Located in the Haut-Languedoc Regional Natural Park, it is officially listed among “Les Plus Beaux Villages de France”, a label awarded to villages with exceptional heritage and remarkable surroundings.
The village spreads across a small hill above the Jaur River. Its stone houses, narrow streets, and vaulted passageways reflect its medieval origins.
Walking through Olargues feels like stepping into a beautifully preserved village where historic architecture and the surrounding natural landscape blend harmoniously.
The Famous Devil’s Bridge
One of Olargues’ most iconic landmarks is the Pont du Diable (Devil’s Bridge), a medieval stone bridge built in the 12th century.
This single-arch bridge connects the two banks of the Jaur River and is one of the most recognizable images of the village. Its elegant silhouette and natural setting make it a particularly photogenic spot.
From the bridge, visitors can enjoy a beautiful view of the village and the surrounding hills.
A Panoramic Medieval Tower
At the top of the village stands the former keep tower, the remains of a medieval castle that once dominated the valley.
Today, this tower offers a remarkable panoramic view over the rooftops of the village, the river, and the mountains of the Haut-Languedoc.
The path leading to the tower passes through charming streets and small squares where visitors can take their time to enjoy the village atmosphere.
Between River and Mountains
Olargues lies in the Jaur Valley, a natural setting highly appreciated for outdoor activities.
The region is ideal for hiking, cycling, and swimming in the river. Several trails allow visitors to explore the hills and forests surrounding the village.
An old railway line has also been converted into a greenway cycling path, a very popular route that crosses the valley and connects several villages of the Haut-Languedoc.
