A 17th-Century Engineering Masterpiece
The Nine Locks of Fonseranes are located in Béziers on the famous Canal du Midi. This spectacular structure is one of the most remarkable technical achievements of the canal, built in the 17th century during the reign of Louis XIV.
The Canal du Midi was designed by engineer Pierre-Paul Riquet, a native of Béziers. His ambition was to connect the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea in order to facilitate trade and transportation. To overcome the terrain around Béziers, engineers had to find a solution that would allow boats to move up or down a significant change in elevation.
The answer was the construction of a unique staircase of locks, now known as the Nine Locks of Fonseranes. Built between 1676 and 1680, the system allows boats to overcome a height difference of about 21.5 meters over nearly 300 meters.
A Spectacular Water Staircase
The locks are arranged in succession like the steps of a staircase. Originally, the system consisted of eight basins and nine gates, allowing boats to move gradually up or down the hillside.
When boats pass through the locks, water is successively filled and drained from each basin. This process moves the boats from one level to the next using only the force of water.
Watching a boat pass from one lock to another is one of the most impressive moments for visitors. The full passage can take around thirty minutes, during which you can follow the boat’s progress along the slope.
This ingenious system has become one of the symbols of the Canal du Midi and one of the most visited sites in the region.
A Major Heritage Site of the Canal du Midi
The Fonseranes Locks are part of the Canal du Midi, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The canal network stretches for more than 240 kilometers, linking Toulouse to the Mediterranean and representing one of the greatest hydraulic engineering projects of its time.
Over the centuries, parts of the system have been modified. Today, not all the original locks are still in use, but the site remains one of the most impressive examples of canal engineering.
The area has also been redesigned to welcome visitors, with walking paths, viewing areas, and landscaped gardens. It has become a popular place for both locals and travelers to stroll.
