A Heritage Site Perched on the Hilltop

The Faugère Windmills, also known as The Three Towers, form a remarkable group of historic windmills standing at 417 meters above sea level. Set on a hill overlooking the village of Faugère and its surrounding vineyards, they are a striking landmark in the landscape. Dating back to the 16th century, the mills were carefully restored in the 1990s, preserving an important piece of Languedoc’s rural heritage.

A Remarkable Panorama

From the summit, a stone-carved orientation table helps visitors identify the breathtaking 360° views. To the south lies the Mediterranean and the coastline near Sète; to the west, the Pyrenees; and to the north, the hills of Lozère and Aveyron. The rolling vineyards and hills around the site create a landscape that changes beautifully with the seasons, especially at sunrise and sunset.

Heritage and History

The windmills were likely built on the foundations of former Gallo-Roman watchtowers before being converted into grain mills during the 16th and 17th centuries, grinding wheat grown in the surrounding countryside. In the 19th century, the Rivière family operated the mills before they were eventually abandoned. During the 20th century, a local association undertook restoration work to preserve both the structure and its mechanism. Today, one of the mills operates in its original way, offering insight into the region’s agricultural past.

Walking and Access

The site can be reached by road from the village of Faugère, but many visitors prefer walking up along the “Chemin des Trois Tours” from the village center (117 m of elevation gain). This marked rural trail offers a pleasant hike through vineyards and natural surroundings.

Visit and Experience

Access to the site is free and open year-round. During the high season, guided tours may be available upon request. In summer, one of the towers houses the local tourist office, and visitors can enjoy a shaded picnic area while taking in the panoramic views.
