The Lake

Located in the commune of Vailhan, just a few kilometers from your holiday home in Gabian, Lake Olivettes is a small reservoir surrounded by wild hills and the typical landscapes of the Haut-Languedoc. Less well known than Lake Salagou, it charms visitors with its intimate and unspoiled atmosphere.

A Hidden Lake in the Heart of Nature

Created by a dam on the Peyne River, Lake Olivettes blends perfectly into its natural surroundings. The garrigue-covered hills, pine trees, and nearby vineyards create an authentic Mediterranean setting. There are no large tourist facilities here — people mainly come for the peace and simplicity.

The lake can be circled on foot or by mountain bike along a path of about 7 kilometers (4.3 miles). The route is accessible and offers beautiful views of the water and surrounding hills.

A Peaceful Atmosphere

The atmosphere is relaxed and family-friendly. You’ll meet fishermen, hikers, and a few families enjoying the lake’s coolness. The area generally remains quiet, even in summer, making it a pleasant alternative to the busier Mediterranean beaches.

Swimming and Relaxation

Swimming is possible below the dam in designated areas. Access is by car up to the parking, and the setting remains natural, without a traditional developed beach. This adds to the charm of the place, but caution is advised, especially with children.

It’s an ideal spot for a simple picnic, reading in the shade, or a refreshing break after a hike.

Why It’s a Great Idea During Your Stay?

For groups staying in Gabian, Lake Olivettes is perfect for:

  • A nature outing just minutes away

  • A quiet activity with children or teenagers

  • A sporty moment (walking, running, mountain biking)

  • A refreshing break in summer

It can easily be combined into a half-day excursion, for example with visits to nearby villages such as Vailhan or Neffiès.

Hiking Tips

The Olivettes Trail is an easy route of approximately 4.4–4.5 km (2.7 miles), which takes about 1 hour 30 minutes to 1 hour 40 minutes at a relaxed pace. It includes a few gentle climbs (around 140 meters of elevation gain) and offers beautiful views over the lake. The path winds through Mediterranean vegetation, including holm oaks, strawberry trees, chestnut trees, and heather…

Perfect from the Gîte

From Gabian, take the direction of Vailhan and follow signs to the Aire de Pique-Nique des Olivettes. This is the closest swimming spot to the gîte.
