A Spectacular Villa in the Heart of Agde

The Château Laurens, also known as Villa Laurens, is one of the most unusual landmarks in the city of Agde. Located on the Belle-Isle estate, between the Hérault River and the Canal du Midi, it sits within a large wooded park that gives the site a peaceful and elegant atmosphere.

The villa was built beginning in 1898 by Emmanuel Laurens, a wealthy heir with a passion for art, music, and travel.

His ambition was to create a total work of art, combining architecture, decoration, furniture, and landscape in a single artistic vision.

Today, the château is considered one of the most remarkable examples of Art Nouveau architecture in the Occitanie region.

An Eclectic and Fascinating Architecture

Château Laurens does not resemble a traditional medieval castle. It is rather an artistic villa where multiple architectural styles blend together in surprising ways.

The architecture combines Art Nouveau, neo-Greek, Orientalist, and Egyptian influences, inspired by Emmanuel Laurens’ many travels.

Inside, visitors discover mosaics, stained-glass windows, murals, and elaborate decorative elements. The house was designed as a place where the arts interact: architecture, music, painting, and decoration were closely connected.

Some rooms contain highly unusual features for the time, such as a large bath-pool decorated with ceramic tiles or richly painted artistic ceilings.

This decorative richness reflects the original and creative personality of its owner.

The Story of an Extraordinary Residence

The life of Emmanuel Laurens is almost as remarkable as his house. As the heir to a large fortune at the end of the 19th century, he decided to devote part of his wealth to building this unique villa.

For several decades, the château became a place for receptions, musical performances, and artistic gatherings.

However, after unfortunate financial investments, Laurens eventually lost much of his fortune and was forced to sell the property in 1938.

Over time, the villa was gradually abandoned and fell into decline. It nearly disappeared from public memory until the city of Agde purchased the property in the 1990s and launched a long restoration project.

After more than twenty years of restoration work, the monument finally reopened to the public in 2023, allowing visitors to rediscover this exceptional place.

An Artistic and Immersive Visit

Today, visiting Château Laurens is a unique experience that combines architecture, history, and decorative arts.

Guided tours help visitors understand the history of the site and the artistic universe imagined by its creator. The tour passes through several restored rooms where visitors can admire the original decorations, stained glass, and furnishings.

The park surrounding the villa also offers a pleasant walk with views over the Hérault River and the historic center of Agde.
