A Cistercian Monument in the Heart of Languedoc

Valmagne Abbey, located in the commune of Villeveyrac in the Hérault, is one of the most renowned Cistercian abbeys in southern France. Founded in the 12th century by Raymond Trencavel, Viscount of Béziers, it flourished for centuries as both a religious and wine-producing center before enduring the upheavals of history.

What Makes It Unique

Nicknamed the “Cathedral of the Vines,” the abbey impresses visitors with its monumental Gothic church, featuring a tall and expansive nave built in the 13th century. After the French Revolution, the church was transformed into a wine cellar, and to this day it still houses large Russian oak vats — remarkable remnants of that period and unique features of the site.

The peaceful cloister, chapter house, Mediterranean gardens, and grape variety conservatory invite visitors to discover a place where spirituality, viticulture, and heritage blend harmoniously.

A Rich and Rewarding Visit

The abbey is designed to welcome all visitors — families, couples, and groups of friends alike. You can explore its various sections, learn about the life of the Cistercian monks and their influence on local winemaking, and admire architectural details that have endured for nearly nine centuries.

After the historical tour, a tasting of the wines produced on site is often offered — a delightful way to extend the cultural experience through the flavors of the Languedoc terroir.

Atmosphere and Ambience

The site exudes a peaceful atmosphere, perfect for a contemplative stroll through the gardens or beneath the cloister arcades. At certain times of the year, concerts and cultural events bring the abbey to life, enhancing its appeal for lovers of living heritage.
